Arbitrators offer contract for largest rail union
An arbitration panel approved a collective bargaining agreement between the United Transportation Union and the major freight railroads, including Norfolk Southern Corp. The five-year agreement covers wages, health and welfare benefits, and work rules. The union represents 40,000 trainmen, conductors, engine service personnel and yardmasters, including 5,000 at Norfolk Southern. Toyota announced Thursday that it has selected a 230-acre site in Putnam County, W.Va., for its new engine plant which has been named Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia Inc. Toyota will invest $400 million in the plant, which will house both machining and assembly shops and have an annual production capacity of 300,000 units, the company announced. It expects to bring 300 new jobs to West Virginia. The plant will be located near the town of Buffalo about 30 miles northwest of Charleston. Toyota plans to begin producing engines for use in the North American-made Corollas in late 1998. (Staff) by CNB
