TEMPERATURE, TEMPERS RISE AT LANGLEY

In the pits before qualifying last week at Langley Speedway, drivers spoke of how the first warm day this season would affect the track and tires. But after the night's five features, there was more talk of the drivers heating up.

A scuffle broke out following the 25-lap Limited Stock feature between two drivers.

Then, after the Late Model Stock feature, driver Roger Sawyer exchanged angry words with members of Phil Warren's crew.

Warren's camp was upset about an incident on lap 75, when Sawyer and Warren tangled heading into turn 3. Warren, who was in second place, dropped to the rear before ending up fourth. Sawyer finished second.

``That rivalry (between Warren and Sawyer) goes back many years,'' promoter Wayne Wyatt said. ``They just voiced their opinions and hopefully will let it be. They're more professional than that. They know if they do stupid stuff, they'll get penalized.''

``We're just going to go on and race (this week),'' Warren said.

In the 100-lap Late Model Stock division, Michael Buffkin will try to make it three straight victories Saturday. Buffkin's win last week moved him into a tie atop the points standings with Greg Edwards.

In Mini Stock, Kevin Harrison of Yorktown is not only undefeated in the first three races at Langley this season, he's undefeated on every lap. Harrison has led all 75 laps.

Michael Waltrip's No. 21 Winston Cup Ford Thunderbird will be on display, and all moms will get a free carnation. Gates open at 1 p.m., with qualifying at 5 and racing at 7.

IN CHAINS: The Train Race returns to Langley this weekend. The 15-lap race features three cars fastened by four-foot chains. The lead car has a motor and no brakes, the second car has no motor and no brakes and the third car has brakes but no motor.

``Last year, we had a 12-car pileup and one flipped over in turn 1,'' Wyatt said. ``We turned the guy's car over, and he ended up winning the race.''

Six teams had entered as of Thursday.

AT SOUTHAMPTON: Franklin's Tony Edwards tied Capron's Speck Edwards and Wade Hollingsworth of Conway, N.C., on the track's all-time win list with his 33rd feature victory last Saturday.

In last week's Super Stock, 11 of 12 starting drivers finished on the lead lap of the 20-lap feature. In a race that featured no cautions, Carrsville's Chuck Perry won in just seven minutes.

The track's regular six events will be held Saturday. Gates open at 4 p.m., with time trials at 5:45 and racing at 7.

AT DIXIELAND: All regular features are scheduled for tonight. Gates open at 5; racing starts at 8. by CNB
