T. MELVIN BUTLER

T. Melvin Butler, 78, died Friday, May 10, 1996, at home.

A native of Portsmouth, he had lived in Hampton since 1939, where he retired from NASA's Langley Research Center as Director for Center Development and External Affairs in January 1975. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, he earned his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic and State University in 1939. Mr. Butler was active in civic affairs, having served on the Hampton City Council from 1976 until 1994. During the last few years as a council member, he was also vice mayor.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Leigh Butler; two daughters, Deborah A. Butler of Virginia Beach and Cynthia Butler Focke and her husband, Joe Focke, of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Sherwood L. Butler of Newport News and Warren A. Butler of Portsmouth; and three grandchildren, Allison, Patrick, and Adrianne.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m Monday in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Hampton, by the Rev. William H. Nuckols Jr. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
