A $15.6 million contract to a Tarboro firm to widen nine miles of N.C. 168 to four lanes has been given the go-ahead by the North Carolina Board of Transportation.
The contract will be awarded to Barnhill Contracting Co. when an environmental permit has been approved. The contract is for widening the two-lane highway from U.S. 158 at Barco to just north of N.C. 34 at Sligo.
R.V. Owens of Nags Head, who represents Currituck County on the board, said work on the project is expected to begin May 27 when signs alerting motorists to the construction are put up by the contractor.
``During construction, safeguards will be taken to protect small streams and wetlands from contamination by soil or construction materials. Grass will be planted to cover bare ground caused by construction,'' Owens said.
Work on the project is scheduled for completion in October of 1998, except for re-forestation work which is scheduled for completion in December of 1998.
