Elizabeth ``Betsy'' Duke, president and CEO of the Bank of Tidewater, will speak at the Outer Banks fifth annual Small Business of the Year award luncheon on Thursday at Penguin Isle Restaurant in Nags Head.
The award is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and Hutchins Allen and Co., an accounting and consulting firm.
Duke - who heads Hampton Roads' third-largest community bank, with assets exceeding $140 million - will share her philosophy of growing a small regional business while competing against large national corporations.
Duke survived a power struggle with her board of directors in 1993, and is one of only three female bank presidents in Virginia.
She is credited with building the Bank of Tidewater into a dominant community resource and savvy commercial lender.
The Small Business Award goes to a company with a record of success, top treatment of employees and a high level of community involvement.
Entries, handled by the Chamber of Commerce, are judged by the Outer Banks chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). Past winners were: Grade A Temps, The Island Gallery and Christmas Shop, Seamark Foods and Kitty Hawk Kites.
