David Nicholas James, 43, of the 1100 block of Sheppard Ave., died May 8, 1996, at his residence.
Dr. James, an associate professor of Philosophy at Old Dominion University, was a native of Iowa City, Iowa. Dr. James received his B.A. from Carleton College and his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. He was a past president of the Virginia Philosophical Association and was active in the American Philosophical Association, North American Kant Society, and many other philosophical groups. He co-edited Rethinking College Athletics with Judith Andre; wrote and published numerous articles on medical ethics, business ethics, Kant, and social and political philosophy. He served on the Faculty Senate and many university committees. Locally, Dr. James served on the Institutional Review Board at Eastern Virginia Medical School, the Lake Taylor Hospital Ethics Committee, and the Norfolk Aquatic Advisory Board.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Thomson James; a son, Andrew Nicholas James of Norfolk; his mother, Evelyn Kartje Buswell of Sun City, Ariz.; and a sister, Ruth Ann Frank of Carbondale, Ill.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
