HONORS, AWARDS
Hayes Seay Mattern & Mattern of Roanoke, which has offices in Virginia Beach, was named to the Top 100 Pure Designer firms by Engineering News - Record magazine. Also, World Architecture magazine has recognized the firm as one of the Top 25 designers for the defense industry.
The City of Virginia Beach was named a winner in the American Economic Development Council 1996 Sales Literature and Promotional Materials Awards Competition. The city earned an Excellent award for its ``Cities 30. Cities 60.'' entry in the TV Spots/Specific category.
The Hampton Roads Maritime Association has honored J. Robert Bray, the port authority's executive director, with its distinguished service award.
Bray, 57, has been the authority's executive director since 1978. He oversaw the unification of the region's ports, which were owned and operated under a balkanized system of city and state agencies.
Before becoming executive director, he was the authority's general counsel. A graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and the College of William and Mary's law school, he first worked as assistant city attorney in Hampton. by CNB
