Edward Smith Manry, 101, of the 20600 block of Gov. Darden Road, died May 11, 1996, in Southampton Memorial Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Southampton County, he was the son of the late Lucius L. and Bettie Smith Manry. Mr. Manry was a retired farmer. He was the oldest living graduate of Randolph Macon College, having graduated in 1916. He had attended Randolph Macon Academy in Bedford. Mr. Manry was an Army veteran of World War I, having served in France in the military police. He was a member of the Urquhart-Gillette Camp of the Sons of the Confederacy. He was a member of Courtland Masonic Lodge (NU)85 and had received a 75-year pin. Mr. Manry was a charter member of the Wakefield Hunt Club and founder of the Manry Hunt Club which bears his name. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member and former trustee of Courtland United Methodist Church.
He is survived by four nieces, Estelle M. Wood of Virginia Beach, Iris B. Manry, Katharine M. Harville and her husband, Bill, and Virginia M. Daughtrey and her husband, Frank, all of Courtland, and Emily R. Smith and her husband, Charles, of Charlottesville; a nephew, Dr. George Reese of Richmond; and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral with Masonic rites and military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Manry family cemetery on Linden Street in Courtland by the Rev. John Wimer. The family will receive friends at the home of Katharine and Bill Harville, 22301 Linden St., Courtland, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and suggest that memorial donations be made to the Courtland Volunteer Fire or Rescue Squads, or the Children's Home Society of Virginia, 4200 Fitzhugh Ave., Richmond, Va. 23230. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge of arrangements.
