The charter boat Outlaw, which sails from Oden's Dock at Hatteras and is skippered by Ken Miller, won the Hatteras Village Invitational billfish tournament by releasing two blue marlin and scoring 800 points.
Second went to the Hatteras Fever, skippered by Walt Spruill, with one blue marlin release and 400 points.
Third went to the Gambler and skipper Steve Garrett. He released a white marlin and a sailfish and scored 400 points. Time-of-catch was used as the tie-breaker.
The Outlaw also had the largest tuna, a yellowfin weighing 80.8 pounds, while the Hatteras Blue had the biggest dolphin at 30.1 and the Mary Beth the heaviest wahoo at 39.0.
Headquartered at Teach's Lair Marina, the year's first billfish contest had 38 competing boats.
Elsewhere, W.T. Oeake Jr. of Newsom, Va., had one of the year's biggest shellcracker (redear) when he boated a 1-pound, 15-ouncer at Western Branch Reservoir in Suffolk.
Jimmy Kolb of Virginia Beach gained the flounder lead in the annual Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament with a 7-8 flatfish boated at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on the Starship.
And Charles Fillman of Fluerson, Pa., caught one of the biggest black drum in Virginia in the past decade, a 100-pounder taken near Byou 36A off Cape Charles and registered at Cherrystone Family Camping Resort.
