NEW TWIST ON BAGEL IS FLAVORFUL INNOVATION

GREAT BALLS of bagel dough, we've discovered Portsmouth's best kept secret.

BagelNUTZ are dinner-roll size bits of dough wrapped around a cream cheese filling. They taste like bagels only more moist and tender than a New York doughnut. They come in three flavors: plain cream cheese, cinnamon-almond cream cheese and chive cream cheese.

The treats are the creation of Portsmouth shop owner Charles Greenhood, who with his wife, Kathy, runs Brutti's, a coffee house tucked away on Dinwiddie Street in Olde Town.

BagelNUTZ have made the rounds at Portsmouth civic league meetings and other social events but were infrequently seen outside P-town city limits. Hey, if I lived in Portsmouth, I'd want to keep these treats to myself as well. At 70 cents each or $7 a dozen, BagelNUTZ are a bargain.

The Greenhoods also make Swiss CluckerNUTZ, a slightly larger version of a BagelNUT filled with chicken salad and Swiss cheese. A couple of Swiss CluckerNUTZ and a drink make a perfect light lunch. Swiss CluckerNUTZ cost $2 each or $20 a dozen.

Brutti's is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Charles Greenhood says you really have to want to dine at Brutti's to eat lunch there because parking spaces nearby can be hard to find. However, Greenhood caters and will deliver to some areas. BagelNUTZ are also available at a kiosk at Portsmouth's Maryview Medical Center. Call, 393-1923.

What grillers want to know

``How do I light the fire?'' was the most frequently asked question for the second consecutive year, according to the folks at the Weber Grill-Line.

This hotline, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, is staffed by a team of home economists who have additional training in barbecue techniques, says Weber spokesman Betty Hughes.

Call (800) 474-5568.

At night and on weekends, the Weber Grill-Line is answered by a tape recorder that offers limited information on such things as how to light a fire.
