COMMON SAILOR 1800-1861: Dr. James F. Valle, chairman of the Department of History and Political Science at Delaware State University, provides a view of military life and discipline during the first half of the 19th Century in a presentation at 7:00 tonight in the Nauticus Theater. MEMORIAL DAY SALUTE: The Mayors Veterans Committee will hold a Citizens Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 27 at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, 19th Street across from the Pavilion Convention Center in Virginia Beach. Rep. Owen B. Pickett, D-2nd District, will speak. A flyover is scheduled at 1 p.m.
ASIAN-PACIFIC HERITAGE: In honor of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, there will be a luncheon at the Fort Monroe Club at 11 a.m. on May 21. VETERANS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Funds for the Vietnam Veterans Family Assistance Program will end on June 30. The program is based on a five-year grant awarded to Family Services of Tidewater in 1991, to counsel veterans and their families exposed to the Agent Orange chemical during service in the Vietnam War. STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL DISPLAYS: Local military commands, including Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, along with veterans, recruiters and historians, will set up numerous displays at the 13th annual Pungo Strawberry Festival. MEMORIAL DAY IN HAMPTON: Peninsula representatives from military installations and the Veterans Administration Medical Center will honor the nation's war dead in a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. May 27 at the Hampton National Cemetery, located on the grounds of Hampton University. Also, a Memorial Day salute ceremony will be held at 11:55 a.m. at Fort Monroe's Continental Park to honor the sacrifices of America's military dead.
DRILL SERGEANTS' COMPETITION: The Army's top 23 drill sergeants from across the nation are at Fort Monroe this week to compete for the title of 1996 U.S. Army Drill Sergeant of the Year. Fourteen active duty and nine reserve drill sergeants will compete; one winner from each component will be selected. Winners will be announced Friday at 9 a.m. The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Fort Monroe's Continental Park.
FHC CHOICE PROGRAM: FHC Choice, the officially selected coordinator of mental health care for military families in Hampton Roads, is sponsoring ``Dollars and Sex,'' a discussion group about two issues that cause the majority of couples' arguments.
