A 20-year-old Suffolk man was fatally injured in a single-car accident about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday on Holland Road.
Albert L. Writtenberry Jr. of the 200 block of Chestnut Street was taken by Nightingale helicopter ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died at 5:47 a.m. after undergoing surgery, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins.
The accident happened on the four-lane, divided highway about two miles west of Lummis Road.
Writtenberry was headed east in the right lane when his 1992 Toyota ran into the left lane, then off the pavement into the median, Simpkins said. The car overturned several times and landed upright in the median, he said.
A passer-by told police Writtenberry was beside the car and fell to the ground just after the accident.
