COX GIRLS REACH BEACH TITLE GAME 2-1

GIRLS SOCCER PLAYOFFS

No overtime, no penalty kicks, Cox's Joanna Hale told herself as the top-seeded Falcons took on fourth-seeded Tallwood in the Beach District girls soccer semifinals Tuesday night.

Neither was called for as Cox continued its district dominance with a 2-1 victory over the Lions on a chilly night at Ocean Lakes High School.

Cox (15-2), ranked No. 1 in The Virginian-Pilot coaches poll will play the winner of tonight's First Colonial-Kempsville winner for the title Friday at 5:15 p.m. at Ocean Lakes.

Tuesday's game played itself out much like Cox's double overtime victory over No. 5 Tallwood (10-5) last week by an identical score. Hale remembered that at the game's start and said the Falcons wanted no part of a nailbiter.

``Last night with the guys' game . . . ``We watched our guys lose with PKs (penalty kicks), and we really didn't want to have to experience that,'' she said.

Hale ignited a spurt of goals in a two-minute span that became the final score. The senior forward controlled a juggle pass from Katie McDonald and knocked it in an open net in the 17th minute of the first half.

A minute later Cox took a 2-0 lead after McDonald snuck a shot past keeper Melanie Harris. But the Lions answered back in a matter of seconds with a goal by Erin Hazlett.

Cox, showing off its tremendous speed, outshot Tallwood 28-6 and remained a step quicker in the second period, keeping the ball in its half of the field for almost the entire 40 minutes.
