Salem continued a late-season run through the playoffs Tuesday with a sudden death penalty kick victory over Kellam in a Beach District semifinal at Ocean Lakes.
After a scoreless regulation, 10 minutes of overtime, 10 more of sudden death extra play and a 3-3 tie in penalty kicks, Sun Devils foreign exchanged student Peter Eskesen scored the decisive goal.
Eskesen of Denmark went right with his kick and Kellam keeper Tim Wheaton guessed left. Peter Andersen had a chance to take the situation one more round, but his try went wide of the right post.
``There is pressure in this (situation),'' Eskesen said. ``You don't want to think about missing it.''
Eskesen had scored in the regular penalty kick overtime for the No. 5-seeded Sun Devils (10-5-1). Teammates Ricky Pratt and Bryan Henry also were successful. But Dustin Keesee, Andersen and Jay Gunia countered for top-seeded Kellam (12-3-1).
The regular season champion Knights still advance to next Monday's opening round of the Eastern Region tournament as the Beach's top seed. Salem advances to Friday's 7 p.m. Beach championship against the winner of tonight's Kempsville-First Colonial match, with the district's second seed at stake.
At the end of regulation, Salem had a 15-12 advantage in shots and had the best chance of the game with about 15 minutes left. Josh Morgan had taken a pass from Bryan Henry and delivered a point-blank blast at Knights keeper Mike Pekera, who made a great diving save. Pekera did the same several minutes later.
