The film is described as a dark comedy, but it addresses some very serious subject matter.
``It's My Party'' stars Eric Roberts playing a gay man with an untreatable AIDS-related illness who decides to end his life with a farewell party. The movie will have its area premiere at the Naro Expanded Cinema at 9:30 p.m. Friday.
Although a grim plot, the film, which also stars Gregory Harrison and Lee Grant, is for a good cause. The $25 admission price benefits AIDSCare and Virginians For Justice, two Hampton Roads groups providing medical care and services to people living with AIDS. The admission fee also includes invitations to the premiere party at 8 p.m. at Harbor Gallery at 1508 Colley Ave. and a nightcap gala at 11:30 p.m. at the White House Cafe at 249 W. York St.
The event is the concept of Ginny Sealey, the marketing and development coordinator for AIDSCare, which is the fund-raising program for Eastern Virginia Medical School's Eastern Regional AIDS Resource and Consultation Center.
``I'm in the AIDS education business, and I thought that a movie with an AIDS theme would be a good way of teaching the public about the disease,'' Sealey said.
The film already has premiered in larger cities around the country. This will be the first showing in Hampton Roads, Sealey said.
