SUFFOLK COUNCIL OKS HIGHER UTILITY RATES

City Council approved a 3 percent water and sewer rate increase for all residents, and approved $819,191 in Community Development Block Grant funding for two area projects Wednesday.

The utility increase in the council's $130 million operating budget was made to offset inflation. Residents' base water rates will increase from $2.81 per 1,000 gallons to $2.89. Sewer rates will increase from $1.41 per cubic foot to $1.45. The new rates take effect July 1.

In other City Council actions, the Nansemond Parkway South sewer extension will get $650,000 in block grant funds, and Battery Avenue, in the Saratoga-Philadelphia community, will get $169,191 in grants.

The money comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The City Council has not approved its entire $130 million operating budget. Some initiatives are still being debated, including whether to continue funding the Downtown Suffolk Association.

Several merchants urged the council on Wednesday to continue supporting the association.

In other business, Mayor S. Chris Jones and Vice Mayor Curtis R. Milteer suggested funding for six additional police officers. City Manager Myles E. Standish said he will study the request.
