FISHING FORECAST

If the weather will just settle down for a few days, some pretty decent catches should be available to anglers in Eastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina.

This is a period of changing seasons, with one front following another. No matter what direction the wind, it seems to come with enthusiasm.

But let's be optimists and say that the weekend will be gorgeous, with temperatures in the 80s and near-calm conditions.

Don't forget that Virginia's ``trophy-fish'' season on striped bass closed at midnight Wednesday and that the ``spring season'' opened with the next tick of the clock.

During this new season, which runs through June 15, only waters of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries will be open. And only fish between 18 and 28 inches will be legal. The bag limit will be two a day.

Meanwhile, if you caught and kept a striper during the ``trophy-fish'' season, don't forget that you're required to file a catch report with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.

Anyway, overall weekend prospects don't look all that bad, discounting the weather. Just don't expect to find things the way they were 25 years ago.

Nothing else is the same, so why should fishing be excluded? by CNB
