Norfolk Southern Corp. has begun new double-stack container service to tie its Midwestern terminals with markets in the Northeast. The daily two-way service connects Chicago and Kansas City with a terminal in Taylor, Pa., near Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The terminal is just off Interstate 81 and should give shippers ready access to northeast markets, the Norfolk-based railroad said. The service will haul truck trailers and double-stacked standardized shipping containers. Norfolk Southern will get the trains to Taylor, Pa., where its tracks don't reach, via the Canadian railroad CP Rail System Ltd. (Staff) Midway will begin service to Baltimore

U.S. Industrial production was unchanged in April when gains related to the end of a strike at General Motors Corp. are excluded, Federal Reserve figures showed. Overall output at factories, mines and utilities increased 0.9 percent last month after falling 0.5 percent in March. The plant-use rate rose to 83 percent in April from an unrevised 82.5 percent in March. Also, higher sales helped U.S. businesses trim stockpiles of unsold goods in March, government figures showed. Business inventories fell by 0.2 percent during the month to a seasonally adjusted $980.544 billion, the Commerce Department said. In February, business inventories increased an unrevised 0.1 percent. (Bloomberg Business News) Government recalls 3 million mini-hammocks
About 3 million lightweight mini-hammocks are being recalled after reports of a dozen children strangling while using them. Made without spreader bars to hold them open, the hammocks resemble a thin rope and can wrap around the necks of children climbing in or out. The 10 manufacturers and importers participating in the recall have agreed to sell only mini-hammocks with spreader bars. Only one manufacturer, E-Z Sales, is offering consumers replacement mini-hammocks with spreader bars. The remaining nine companies are giving full refunds. They are: Academy Broadway, Rothco, Algoma Net Co., Avid Outdoor, Coghlan's, Nelson/Weather-Rite, Schwarzman Export Import Co., Standard Sales and Texsport. (AP) by CNB
