Ruth Lamb Clendenning, 95, a native of Old Norfolk County and retired teacher, died peacefully May 14, 1996, after a brief hospitalization.
A graduate of Madison College, ``Miss Ruth'' began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse and is fondly remembered by her many former pupils in Old Norfolk County, Currituck County, and Virginia Beach school systems. Retired since 1967, Mrs. Clendenning remained active and involved in her community, enjoying travel and other activities with the Great Bridge Senior Citizens and Mennonite Seniors' Club of Mt. Pleasant. A member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist since 1918, she taught the adult Sunday school class and served on the official and administrative boards of the church.
Predeceased by her husband of 41 years, W. Ward Clendenning; four sisters; and daughter, Catherine Hart; she is survived by her devoted son, Harold H. Clendenning, his wife, Elizabeth, as well as her sister, Elsie Lamb Whitfield, all of Chesapeake. Among other survivors are a granddaughter Shelia; a grandson, Wayne and his wife, Mary; a great-granddaughter, Jessica, all of Chesapeake; a grandson, Jerry Ward Hart and wife, Pam of Utah; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Robert Sowder, Rev. Phillip Miller, and the Rev. Tom Mercer. Interment will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family received friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
