Pier fishing improved along the northern beaches Thursday.
Some small bluefish and sea mullet were taken on Kitty Hawk Pier.
Avalon Pier reported 16- to 17-inch gray trout and tailor bluefish caught during the morning. Some small gray trout were landed during the afternoon.
A few nice sea mullet, tailor blues and gray trout were landed from Nags Head Pier early in the morning and again late in the afternoon. Most of the fish were taken on squid.
Anglers on Outer Banks Pier caught quite a few small gray trout and mixed-sized bluefish throughout the morning. A few sea mullet and gray trout were taken later in the day.
On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported a few sea mullet, spot and flounder landed.
Nice-sized speckled trout, bluefish, sea mullet and lots of spot were caught by fishermen on Avon Pier during the morning. Fishing slowed during the afternoon as the tide began to fall.
Bluefish, gray trout and some sea mullet were landed early in the morning on Frisco Pier. Fishing was slow the remainder of the day.
Anglers fishing the incoming tide along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet caught some small blues and bottom fish.
A few bottom fish and gray trout were taken around Oregon Inlet. Some speckled trout were landed on the inlet's south side.
A few croaker, spot and small bluefish were taken by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton.
A 9-pound bluefish, small bluefish and a few puppy drum were beached at Cape Point Wednesday night. Some yearling drum were landed early Thursday morning. A few puppy drum, small bluefish and keeper flounder were taken during the day.
Small bluefish were taken in good numbers Wednesday evening on cut bait by surfcasters along the beach near Hatteras Village. Fishing from Ramp 55 to Hatteras Inlet was slow Thursday.
Boaters in Hatteras Inlet caught some nice flounder Thursday.
Blue water action southeast of Oregon Inlet was fair Thursday. Charters averaged between 8 and 10 yellowfin tuna. A few wahoo and scattered dolphin also were taken. Several blue marlin were seen, but none were taken. The best action was around ``the point.''
Only one boat from the Hatteras fleet fished offshore Thursday because of rough seas. The Connector landed one dolphin and one tuna, and released a white marlin.
The water temperature was 58 degrees Thursday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 63 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island.
Southwest winds should produce night runs of red drum at Cape Point during the weekend. by CNB
