FBI SEARCHING PHILADELPHIA AREA FOR TWO ARMED VIRGINIA ESCAPEES

The FBI was searching Friday for two men who overpowered a sheriff's deputy in Virginia, stole his gun and a car, and fled north.

The men are believed to be near Philadelphia, said FBI spokeswoman Linda Vizi.

The fugitives were identified as Charles Miller, 30, described as a white male, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with shoulder-length brown hair and, possibly, a goatee; and Terrence Plummer, 6-4, 200 pounds, with a thin beard and moustache.

They are believed to be driving a 1989 maroon Ford Taurus, with Virginia license ZRD2294.

Miller was serving time for grand larceny, maiming and a previous escape, while Plummer was awaiting trial for bank robbery and related offenses.

The FBI said the two prisoners attacked a deputy in Louisa County, Va., and stole his gun. They pulled a driver from her car and drove away.

The FBI believes the escapees may have robbed a Meridian Bank in Philadelphia on Friday morning.

Earlier in the day, the two were spotted on Interstate 95 in Maryland.

The Maryland State Police reported that the car, which the prisoners stole at gunpoint from a teen-age girl in Louisa County shortly after their escape, was spotted at 3 a.m. in a northbound lane, 20 miles from the Delaware border.

``This is the first substantial report we've had of an actual sighting,'' Louisa County Sheriff's Capt. Kenny Harper said.

``I think the investigation is funneling itself in the Maryland-Delaware direction.''
