The Peace Officer's Memorial Day service at the Norfolk Municipal

Center on Friday was an emotional event for Edith Dyre, above, whose

son, police officer Douglas Eric Dyre, was killed in 1984 in the

line of duty. Beside her are her husband, James L. Dyre, and Dawn

Dyre, her daughter-in-law. The ceremony, honoring the 33 Norfolk

police officers killed in the line of duty since 1904, was held in

conjunction with National Police Week. Officer Dyre was the

department's most recent death. At left, Detective Robert Douros

speaks to the crowd. He was shot in the arm several weeks ago during

a search. His brother, Stephen, also a police officer, was killed

while on duty in 1980. ``I thank God almighty for giving me a second

chance,'' Douros said. ``I don't consider it luck. I consider it

divine intervention.''
