PIER FISHING OUTPACES SURF FISHING; BLUE WATER IS FAIR

Pier fishing was good along the northern beaches on Friday. Kitty Hawk Pier fishermen reported good fishing, with spot, sea mullet, gray trout and bluefish landed.

Fishing also was good on Avalon Pier, where anglers landed plenty of gray trout, bluefish, speckle trout, spot and sea mullet.

Gray and speckle trout, blues, spot and croaker were taken from Nags Head Pier during most of the morning. A few sea mullet and spot were caught during the afternoon.

On Outer Banks Pier, spot, sea mullet, and undersized gray trout were abundant during the morning. Fishing slowed over the afternoon.

South of Oregon Inlet, anglers caught sea mullet, gray trout, sand perch and small spot from Rodanthe Pier.

Sea mullet, spot, croakers, small gray trout and some sand sharks were landed throughout the day on Avon Pier.

Frisco Pier reported slow fishing. Anglers managed to catch a few sand perch, mullet, croaker and sea mullet.

Surf fishing was slow along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Around Oregon Inlet, a few small bottom fish were landed.

Small flounder and some puppy drum were taken along the beach from Oregon Inlet to Buxton.

At Cape Point, big drum fishing was good Thursday night. Some drum were also caught at the Cape on Friday, along with some blues and bottom fish. Some nice flounder and bluefish were landed along the beach from Ramp 55 to Hatteras Inlet by surfcasters.

Blue-water fishing off Oregon Inlet was fair Friday. Charters averaged eight to 12 yellowfin tuna per boat. Scattered dolphin and a few wahoo were also taken. One blue marlin was released.

Charter craft out of Hatteras caught some big yellowfin tuna, some dolphin and a few wahoo. Several marlin were released.

The water temperature was 58 degrees Friday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck and 64 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
