PORTSMOUTH - Two records were shattered in Friday's opening action in the Southeastern District boys and girls track meets at Churchland High School.
The Oscar Smith boys and the Great Bridge girls forged into the early lead after the completion of three events.
The meet resumes today at 10:15 a.m. at Churchland.
Jesse Grant of Indian River reeled off a 23-3 1/2 long jump, breaking the mark set by Deep Creek's James Harper at 22-10 in 1989.
Norcom's Missy Banks broke the girls' shot record with a throw of 43-10. The previous record was 42-6 by Shane Johnson of Great Bridge in 1989.
The Oscar Smith boys had no firsts but placed three in the high jump and had runner-up finishers in the shot and long jump. The Tigers moved out to 31 1/2-27 edge over runner-up Deep Creek.
Great Bridge had a win in the high jump at 5-2 (with fewer misses) by Kalisha Brown and a second-place finish by Jill Ferguson to spark the Wildcats to a 30-23 lead over Norcom.

EASTERN DISTRICT
NORFOLK - Granby's girls dominated the field events, and added a surprise win in the 3,200 relay to take a commanding lead Friday in the first day of the Eastern District track meet at Norview High.
Tanya Jones won the high and triple jumps to lead the Comets, while Nicole Jackson won the discus.
In the 3,200 relay, the quartet of Jaquetta Harrell, Shanequa Williams, Marquita Morton and Fanetta Malin was two seconds faster than second-place Maury. The Comets trailed heading into the final lap, but Malin pulled away over the last 50 meters to win it for the Comets.
``She just turned on her battery and started moving,'' Williams said.
Granby piled up 65 points, while Maury has 27. Maury's lone victory came from Emily Kirsch, in the 3,200. Kirsch left teammate Sarah Grady in the fifth lap.
``I have to stay in front, or I fall into a comfortable stride,'' she said.
Granby also took a first-day lead in the boy's meet, as Anthony King won the triple jump and Rueben Waites took the pole vault. The Comets picked up 36 points, while Norview has 25.
The Booker T. Washington team of Chester Jones, Londre Hankins, Brian Riddick and Jameel Booker won the 3,200-meter relay, while Norview's Melwood Waters won the shot put.
The meet resumes today at 1:30 p.m.
