CITY TOUR SEEKS TO MAKE AMBASSADORS OF CITIZENS

A free tour designed to showcase Portsmouth's attractions to the city's residents, Portsmouth Residents' Day Tour, will depart from the Portside Visitors Information Center at noon Thursday.

Tour sites include the Olde Towne Trolley Tour, Norfolk Naval Shipyard's Trophy Park, The Commodore Theater, the Arts Center, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and the Children's Museum of Virginia.

It also includes tours of the Naval and Lightship Museums, a stop at City Park for a ride on the Pokey Smokey and a tour of Willett Hall.

Promoted by the Portsmouth Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau, the tour is designed to make ``ambassadors'' of the city's residents. It is a brainchild of the city's marketing committee.

``We felt it was a good idea to have a residents' tour,'' said Voncile Gilbreath, the media relations manager for the bureau. ``We've done it for the tourism industry for Virginia Heritage Tourism Week. The timing was excellent since we are embarking on the tourist season.

``We hope that the tour will enable residents to showcase their city to visiting relatives and friends.''
