GLADYS W. SMITH

Gladys W. Smith departed this life on May 13, 1996, at her residence. She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene ``Earl'' Smith.

She was a teacher for the Norfolk Public School System for over 30 years, having retired in 1974. She was a member of the National Education Association, the Norfolk Education Association and the Virginia Education Association. During her teaching career, Gladys received a citation for her outstanding contribution and her many years of service to the Norfolk Public Schools. She was also a faithful member of Basilica of St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception. Gladys always had a smile. She never uttered an unkind word to or about others.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolsue S. Brooks of Chesapeake; a son-in-law, Larry L. Brooks Sr. of Maryland; two grandsons, Larry L. Brooks Jr. of Maryland and Gennan Rashaad Brooks of Chesapeake; a cousin, Richard Fleming of Delaware; a brother-in-law, Jesse H. Smith of New York; five nieces, Sheena, Rosalyn, Terri, Lynette and Phyllis; a nephew, Milton; devoted in-laws, the Minton family of New York and the Randolph family of Washington, N.C.; and a host of ``special'' friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Basilica of St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception by Father Walter Barrett and Father Thomas Quinlan, Monday at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The body will be placed in church at 11 a.m. the day of the funeral. Pretlow and Sons' Funeral Home, Chesapeake, is in charge. ILLUSTRATION: Personal photo
