CIVIL ENGINEERING SURVEY SHOWS STARTING PAY AT $40,000 IN SOUTH

New civil engineering graduates earned average entry-level salaries of $40,000 in the South last year, according to a survey by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The ASCE salary survey reported the highest entry-level salaries in Miami, Charlotte and Atlanta.

The salary survey listed entry-level positions in Virginia Beach as $24,000; mid-level $44,000 to $49,000; and senior-level $62,900 to $83,033.

Nationally, the average entry-level salary for civil engineers was $31,525 last year. Mid-level engineers averaged $51,500 to $58,000, and senior-level engineers averaged $73,000 to $85,900.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, to meet the nation's future needs, the number of civil engineering jobs will increase from the 1994 figure of 184,500 to 218,700 by the year 2005.

ASCE president Charles A. Parthum said the largest demand for civil engineers will be in developing areas that require major infrastructure work such as Africa, China, India and Bangladesh.
