J. Jerry Freeman, 63, died May 18, 1996, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
Mr. Freeman was a native of New York City and a resident of Virginia Beach for 28 years. He was the Virginia and North Carolina district director for the Federal Communications Commission, where he had been employed since 1960 until his retirement in August of 1995. He was a member of Ohef Sholom Temple in Norfolk; Norfolk Masonic Lodge (NU)1; honorary member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers; member of the Virginia Beach Amateur Radio Club; and was an avid boater. He was written up in Life magazine in the 1940s as the Eagle Scout with the most merit badges. He gave 15 years of service to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, 14 of which were spent as president of one of the units.
Jerry attended Cornell University and graduated from the University of Miami. He was the first field engineer with the FCC to be the recipient of the Eugene Bowler Award. He was responsible for the training of all engineers nationwide, hired by the FCC. He was the local spokesman for the FCC regarding various communication topics concerning Tidewater residents on numerous broadcast and printed media formats.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Shirley Read Freeman; two daughters, Lenore F. Lefton and her husband Dr. Ronald Lefton of Virginia Beach, and their children, Jason and Brian, Bert F. Harvell of Springfield, Va., and Brian Harvell of Chesapeake, and their children, Dustin and Holden; a son, Larry L. Freeman and his wife Catherine of Chesapeake and their children, Joseph and Noelle, a sister, Edie Freeman Fine of North Miami Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Herbert Freeman of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Leonard Freeman, M.D. of Roslyn, N.Y.
A chapel service will be conducted at noon Tuesday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, by Rabbi Lawrence A. Forman. Burial will be in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery.
Jerry will be missed immensely by all of his family and friends who loved him so dearly. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Family Services of Norfolk.
