VELMA W. POWELL

Velma Wood Powell, 74, of the 500 block of Pennsylvania Ave., died May 18, 1996, in Norfolk.

Mrs. Powell, a native of Monticello, Ark., was the widow of J.O. Powell. She was a member of Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. Mrs. Powell was very active in the civil rights movement in Little Rock, Ark., during the 1950s. She was a legal secretary and a high school teacher and was very active in the State League of Women Voters in Arkansas. She was the director of the Norfolk Education Association and served on the Board of Directors of the Norfolk Y.W.C.A. She was an undergraduate from the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and received her master's degree from Old Dominion University, where she was a faculty member for 18 years.

Mrs. Powell is survived by a sister, Emeline Wood Bonnell of Pretty Lake, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted today at 4 p.m. in Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in Arkansas at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Norfolk Chapter. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
