A 33-year-old man was freed on $100,000 bond Sunday after being charged with endangering the lives of his children by leaving them in a locked minivan.
Asa James Wilson of the 2000 block of Aloma Drive was arrested Saturday after his 8-year-old daughter, Stefanie, pointed him out to a police officer.
Minutes earlier, she and her brother, Matthew, 3, had been locked inside the van without benefit of an open window or air conditioning.
Police said the children were overcome by heat although neither was seriously ill.
A passer-by spotted them in the van parked at the Haygood Shopping Center off Independence Boulevard about 7:45 p.m.
Police officer Shawn Walther freed them. Police said Asa Wilson had left the children in the van while he went to a car show at the shopping center.
The children were taken to Sentara Bayside Hospital for checkups and were then released to their mother.
