Anglers took advantage of the summerlike conditions of the past few days to make some colorful catches along the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina.
Big black drum made a good showing in the lower Chesapeake Bay; red drum were caught in the lower Bay and at Cape Point on Hatteras; big blue marlin hit offshore, and black bass were in a feeding mood on local fresh waters.
Anglers aboard the Bullfrog, out of Hatteras, released a blue marlin Saturday and another Sunday. The first was caught by Daniel Willard of Buxton-on-Hatteras, the other by Mike Ferrell of Blacksburg, Va.
The weekend's biggest reported black drum was an 86-pound, 13-ounce fish caught off Kiptopeke by Ronald Oakes of Norfolk, fishing on the boat Speckles.
The heaviest black bass was a 9-pounder pulled from a tributary of the Northwest River in Chesapeake by James Corbitt, a sophomore at Deep Creek High School. It's one of the biggest bass ever for the stream.
