NAVY VOLUNTEERS TO CLEAN BAY: Navy volunteers are being sought to participate in Hampton Roads' regional effort to ``Clean the Bay'' from 9 a.m. to noon June 8. Norfolk Naval Station personnel will clean litter from surrounding beaches, shores and inland waterways. A complimentary hot dog and hamburger lunch will be provided. SYMPHONY CONCERT: Norfolk Naval Base and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum Foundation will present ``Symphony by the Sea,'' featuring the Virginia Symphony, June 6 on the softball fields near the aircraft carrier piers at Norfolk Naval Station. The 7 p.m. concert is free and open to the public. The symphony, conducted by Norfolk native, Thomas Wilkins, will present a lively, narrated musical salute to the Navy in Hampton Roads. The Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the John C. Stennis, will be open for tours from 4 until 6:45 p.m. Other events during the evening include ``a musical petting zoo,'' which will allow visitors to try out their favorite instrument, and a wine festival, sponsored by Virginia wineries. Food and beverages will be available for sale. Gates for the show open at 5 p.m. For more information, call 464-7665.
MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY: Northwest Naval Security Group Activity will hold a Memorial Day ceremony Friday at 8 a.m. at the base's Civil War cemetery. The ceremony will include a wreath-laying and a 21-gun salute by members of the Marine Corps Security Force Training Company. The public is invited to this free event.
BEACH REPLENISHMENT PROJECT: Due to years of erosion, Dam Neck Fleet Combat Training Center's beaches are undergoing major sand replenishment. This means there will be only limited access for beachgoers this year. Visitors may sunbathe, walk, run, fish and wade at the beaches until Memorial Day weekend, when swimming and surfing will be allowed. Both the Shifting Sands and the Sea Breeze beaches will have limited hours throughout the summer until Labor Day. Dam Neck officials recommend that beach visitors use other facilities, such as Fort Story, Sandbridge or Virginia Beach.
CONSTRUCTION AT FORT EUSTIS: Ground-breaking was held Monday for the Deployment Training Center, the first major classroom facility to be built at Fort Eustis in the past 30 years. Construction is scheduled to begin this month on the $5 million project, which will accommodate 52 staff members and 476 students.
SURGEON RE-ENACTMENT: The Hampton Roads Naval Museum presents a re-enactment of a Confederate Naval Assistant Surgeon and his nursing assistants at Drug Abuse Resistance Education Day at Norfolk's North Side Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. The event is sponsored by the Norfolk Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit and is free and open to the public.

RETURNING:
Military Sealift Command's oiler Leroy Grumman is scheduled to return to Norfolk on Friday following a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. Its crew of 81 civil service mariners and 22 Navy personnel is commanded by Merchant Marine Capt. Carl V. Mallett of Chesapeake.
The Portsmouth-based Coast Guard cutter Northland returned home Monday from a nearly two-month-long patrol in the Caribbean. For its commanding officer, Cmdr. James Decker, it was his last patrol on Northland. He is to be relieved in July by Cmdr. Beverly Kelley.
CHANGE OF COMMAND:
Capt. Carl Lundquist relieves Capt. Larry Gionet as commander of Surface Warfare Development Group, at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Gionet retired after more than 30 years of service. Lundquist comes from the West Coast, where he commanded Destroyer Squadron 21.
Capt. Christopher W. Cole relieves Capt. Thomas M. Wittkamp as commanding officer of the multipurpose amphibious assault ship Kearsarge. Cole is awaiting orders to his next assignment.
Cmdr. James K. Scholl relieves Cmdr. Timothy D. LaBelle as commanding officer of Strike Weapons and Tactics School, Atlantic. LaBelle's next assignment will be in Osan, South Korea, with Combat Plans/Staff Liaison, Seventh Air Force. Scholl most recently served as executive officer of the Oceana-based school.
Rear Adm. Joseph J. Dantone Jr. relieves Air Force Maj. Gen. Philip W. Nuber as director of the Defense Mapping Agency in Merrifield, Va. Dantone was formerly commanding officer of the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower in Norfolk.
