A woman whom police think was shot by her husband over the weekend was listed in serious condition Tuesday in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Katherine Bynum, 40, was shot in the chest late Friday night after a dispute with her husband, Robbin A. Bynum, 48, police said.
Police have charged the husband, a Portsmouth firefighter, with malicious wounding, shooting into an occupied vehicle and use of a firearm.
The shooting occurred outside the couple's home on the 200 block of Park Manor Road, after Bynum shot through the windshield of a car his wife was driving, police said.
After she was shot, police said, Katherine Bynum drove down Elmhurst Lane until she reached the 700 block, then lost control of her car. She hit a parked car sitting in a driveway and trash along the way before stopping.
Around 10 p.m., police received reports of an accident at the intersection of Elmhurst and Mimosa streets. They found Katherine Bynum slumped over the steering wheel, unconscious, a wound to her chest and a bullet hole in the windshield.
Robbin Bynum, who is being held in the city jail without bond, has been with the Portsmouth Fire Department since March 1986. He was formerly a Norfolk police officer. The process for Bynum's suspension has begun, fire officials said.
