SUFFOLK EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR HIRING A NEW POLICE CHIEF

The city's nationwide search for a new police chief has been extended nearly two months to allow the city to advertise in additional publications. The delay, however, does not give city officials time to hire a new department head before Chief G.F. ``Spud'' Jackson leaves office.

Originally the closing date for applications was April 26, but the city missed deadlines for posting the vacancy in certain publications and decided to re-advertise.

The deadline now is June 21.

Jackson, who has been chief for 20 years, will retire July 1. He oversees 116 sworn officers and 35 civilians.

Requirements for the job include a degree from a four-year college or university with course emphasis in police administration, criminal justice or a related field and 10 to 15 years in law enforcement work with three to five years of major command responsibility.

Salary range for the position is listed at $52,893 to $76,694. by CNB
