ORVILLE G. CANDLER JR.

Major Orville George Candler Jr. of the U.S. Marine Corps. (Ret.), 75, passed to a better place in the bosom of our Lord on May 20, 1996, in a Virginia Beach hospital.

He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1969 after 27 years of service. He was a native of Lowry, Va., Bedford County. Mr. Candler was a charter member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Salem, Va. He was also a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was the son of the late Orville George and Ada Combs Candler.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty Nichols Candler; two sons and daughters-in-law, G. Michael and Cynthia Hughes Candler of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Dr. Robert A. and Shannon Russell Candler of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Brian and Tracy Candler of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Zachary, John, and Abigail Candler, all of Virginia Beach; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday by Father James E. Parke in Hampton National Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends at the residence of Dr. Robert A. Candler. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
