PENINSULA CYCLIST ELUDING POLICE IS THROWN INTO BAY AFTER CRASH

A Newport News man was seriously hurt Wednesday night near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel after he crashed a motorcycle trying to elude police and was thrown into the Chesapeake Bay, police spokesman Larry Hill said.

Hill said an officer on patrol in the East Ocean View area saw three men speeding on motorcycles shortly after 7 p.m. The officer called for backup, flashed her lights and attempted to stop the speeders.

One pulled over, but the other two sped away, Hill said.

The officer followed one of the motorcycles to the 300 block of W. Ocean View Ave. where the driver wrecked and then ran away. He was not captured.

Meanwhile, a second police cruiser followed the third biker onto Interstate 64. The suspect and the police cruiser were traveling about 60 mph, Hill said. A police supervisor called off the pursuit.

The motorcycle then struck something on the bridge-tunnel and the driver went into the water.

Hank Gavan, fishing near the bridge where the man fell in, said he pounded on the man's chest to restore his breathing. With the help of David Karlson II, a Hampton paramedic, he helped pull the man ashore and stabilized him until paramedics arrived.

Injuries of the victim, identified as Glen Anthony Fields, of the 800 block of Brighton Lane included left leg and arm fractures. He was taken to a local hospital where he was in stable condition. Traffic charges against him are pending. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
