WINNERS OF ARTS GRANTS ANNOUNCED

The Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission has announced the winners of its annual art education grants.

The 42 recipients received grant money to allow them to develop their talents. This year's auditions, held at Oscar F. Smith High School, included 97 candidates.

Most of this year's winners fell into the instrumental, band and dance categories. But there were a few in other arts disciplines, too.

``Luckily we had a few in visual arts and drama,'' said L. Randy Harrison, Chesapeake's fine arts coordinator. ``We're hoping to see more in these two fields next year. But overall we saw some great talent and excellent creativity.''

The students were all rated by a panel of judges, all experts in their own arts fields.

``We feel lucky top have gotten a good group of dedicated and expert judges in several different arts categories,'' Harrison said. ``And we got many, many favorable comments from all of the judges, who were very impressed by the talent they saw.''

This year's judges were:

Russell Stanger, former musical director and conductor of the Virginia Symphony, associated with the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and in charge of instrumental studies at the New York State Summer School of Art.

Rod Martell, musician, music educator and member of the Virginia Symphony.

Rod Taylor, artist and faculty member of Norfolk State University's Fine Arts Department.

Denise Doucette, dance instructor.

Harold Protsman, piano soloist, noted accompanist and a faculty member of the Old Dominion University music department.

Phyllis Hunter, private voice instructor.

Bill Blanchard, fine arts commissioner, playwright and actor.
