WILLIAM J. BARONE

William James ``Bill'' Barone, 70, of the 600 block of Sirine Ave., died May 23, 1996, in Norfolk.

A native of New Haven, Conn., Bill joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters in World War II, participating in the invasion of Southern France. He served in Korea during the Inchon invasion and, on a second tour, performed advisory duty to the Korean Navy. After his retirement following 20 years of naval service, Bill joined the Virginia Beach Police Department, rising to the rank of detective, and later, master police officer. While employed with the VBPD, he initiated the investigative criminal apprehension program. He retired after 20 years and started a singing career that was culminated when he received his degree in choral conducting from TCC. He was a Catholic and sang in the St. Gregory's Choir and the Calvary Baptist Church Choir.

Bill is survived by his wife, Margaret J. Barone; two sons, Scott J. Barone of Virginia Beach and Gregory A. Barone of Suffolk; a sister, Shirley Buckholz of Florida; and a brother, Carl E. Barone of Connecticut; a grandson, Nicholas A. Barone of Suffolk; and a special friend, Joan Bryant. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Lillian Barone; and by two brothers, Langdon and Franklin Barone.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Saturday at noon by the Rev. Paschal Kneip, O.S.B., in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
