George Raymond Rowsom, 84, of the 400 block of Railroad St., died Tuesday, May 21, 1996.
He was born Sept. 8, 1911 in Tyrrell County to the late Clarence A. Rowsom and Annie G. Leigh. He was the owner and president of the Rowsom Funeral Home in Columbia, Roper and Edenton, N.C. He was also the owner and operator of the Rowsom Furniture Store. He was a deacon at Zion Grove Disciples of Christ Church, and was superintendent of the Sunday School years for the past 60 years. He was a retired mayor of Columbia and an alderman. He served as a member on the school board and numerous other boards and committees.
Preceding him in death are his parents; two sisters, Annie R. Carter and Mary E. Rowsom; a brother, Henry F. Rowsom and a foster son, Willoughby ``Twig'' Midgett. Survivors include his wife, Helen Spruill Rowsom of the home; a daughter, Dazzerini Pitt of Tarboro; a son, George L. Rowsom of Edenton, N.C.; two brothers, James H. Rowsom of Tarboro, N.C., Clarence W. Rowsom of Chicago; and three grandchildren, Brian M. Rowsom of Charlotte, Corey and Terill Pitt of Tarboro.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Grove Disciples of Christ Church. Visitation will be held Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church. Rowsom Funeral Home in charge.
