NATIONAL WRITING WINNER

T.J. Ward of Manteo High School was a first-place winner in the National Federation of Press Women High School Contest, the only North Carolina journalism student to win the honor this year.

His winning story scored in the sports category. It was headlined, ``School Board Upholds Suspensions,'' and appeared in the November issue of the Manteo High School newspaper, ``Sound to Sea.''

Ward will receive an award of $250 at the federation's national convention in Charlotte June 29.

Ward's article became eligible for the national honor after it earned first-place honors in the North Carolina press contest in March.

Ward is the son of Jack and Linda Ward of Southern Shores. He plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall. by CNB
