NEIGHBORHOOD NETWORK TO SEEK SOLUTIONS TO CRIME PROBLEMS

Neighborhood solutions to crime problems will be the topic of the first forum of a new Norfolk community group called Neighborhood Network.

The forum will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Huntersville Recreation Center, 830 Goff St., Norfolk. The moderator will be Joshua Paige, who is president of the Inner-City Federation of Civic Leagues.

The new Neighborhood Network is trying to create an ongoing conversation in which any citizens as well as neighborhood leaders ``can share ideas about what works in their communities and what doesn't,'' said Terry Smith, a network organizer who lives in Bromley.

Smith and other organizers said they saw a need to create the network even though there are other civic groups. ``A lot of people are looking for some place to mingle and network informally,'' she said. ``They feel they can't do that in more formal meetings,'' she added.

``It's not closed to anybody. Any city official who wants to attend is more than welcome, but we're really looking for solutions to community problems from the community.''

Crime was chosen as the first topic based on a civic league survey taken earlier this year, Smith said.

Discussion questions, she said, will include one about how people feel the city's PACE community policing program is working.

Neighborhood Network hopes to continue holding quarterly forums on other topics, she said.
