Stephenson Pope Babcock died in an automobile accident Friday, May 24, 1996 in San Quentin, Mexico.
He was 22 years old and had graduated from Duke University two weeks ago. Having spent his summers in Bridgehampton, N.Y., he had served as a lifeguard and was an active surfer, and was traveling with Duke friends to surf in Baja, Calif.
Pope was born in New York City and spent most of his early life there, graduating from St. Bernard's School before his family moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. He then followed his father and older brother, graduating from Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Va. with Cum Laude honors. He received a B.A. degree in political science from Duke University and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce M. Babcock of Winston-Salem and by his two brothers, Luke of New York City and Thomas of Winston-Salem; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Burroughs Jr. of Norfolk; and many friends, including Shannon Miller of San Mateo, Calif.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Duke University in care of the Stephenson Pope Babcock Scholarship Fund, or to Medi-Mex (a medical missionary to Mexico), in care of P.O. Box 5146, Lansing, Ill. 60438. Vogler Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
