HAMPTON IS the seventh city to have YouthMapping.
The first project was organized in 1992 in New York City by Richard Murphy, director of the Washington-based Center for Youth Development and Policy Research. The other cities are Boston; San Francisco; Columbus, Ind.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Birmingham, Ala.
``The beauty of YouthMapping is that the information is all from young people's perspectives,'' said Greg Taylor, YouthMapping director at the Center for Youth Development and Policy Research.
San Francisco teens came up with the idea of including inexpensive restaurants, for example.
Sometimes the perspective of teenagers can be tinged with sadness. In New York City, teens decided to include funeral homes because many of their friends were being killed in street violence, Taylor said.
Taylor hopes more cities will start YouthMapping projects.
``If it can weave (teens) better into the fabric of the community, then it sounds like something I'd like to know more about,'' said Norfolk's Mayor Paul D. Fraim. ``It sounds like a wonderful program.''
