Evelyn Brooking Singleton, 74, died Sunday, May 26, 1996, at the Meadows Nursing Center in Goochland after a prolonged illness.
She was the widow of R.C. ``Tommy'' Singleton, and a loving mother and friend. Mrs. Singleton was a faithful member of Elpis Christian Church and was retired from Markel Corp.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn S. Nicholas of Goochland and Hilda Kay Diggs of Norfolk; her sons-in-law, Clinton H. Nicholas, and W. Emmett M. Diggs; four grandchildren, Andrea McDermott, Gregory S. Wise, and Kevin Nicholas, all of Goochland, Mary Evelyn ``MiMi'' Smith of Chesapeake; two great-grandchildren, Koty Smith and Kaitlyn McDermott; a brother, James E. Brooking; three sisters, Aston B. Layne, Bernice Vaughan, and Brenda Harless. She was preceded in death by a brother, Noel R. Brooking Jr.
Her remains rest at the West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street Road, Richmond. The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today at the Elpis Christian Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Faith Wesleyan Church Building Fund, 1099 Kempsville Road, Norfolk, Va. 23502.
