WEEKEND FISHING

In spite of less-than-ideal weather, the long Memorial Day weekend provided some memorable moments for anglers.

Shellcracker action finally got hot at Western Branch Reservoir in Suffolk, where Ronald Moss earned citation awards from the Virginia Fresh Water Fishing Program with 12 fish meeting the state's 1-pound minimum. The Suffolk angler claimed 10 of the award-winning fish one day and returned the next day to boat two more. His biggest weighed 1 pound, 8 ounces.

Meanwhile, big yellowfin tuna provided steady action off the North Carolina Outer Banks, where several billfish also were released. And red drum and black drum kept many anglers busy on the lower Chesapeake Bay.

Irene Mlodynia of Machipongo on the Eastern Shore took the spadefish lead in the annual Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament with an 11-pounder boated off Hungars Creek. And Robert Savage Jr. of Durham, N.C., took the contest's red drum lead with a 56-7 fish, caught out of Oyster from the charter boat Little Bit.
