FREE SYMPHONY PERFORMANCE: Norfolk Naval Base and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum Foundation is sponsoring ``Symphony by the Sea,'' featuring the Virginia Symphony, at 7 p.m. June 6 at the Norfolk Naval Station.

The symphony, conducted by Norfolk native Thomas Wilkins, will present a lively, narrated musical salute to the Navy in Hampton Roads. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be held on the softball fields near the aircraft carrier piers at the base.

The Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the John C. Stennis, will be open for tours from 4 to 6:45 p.m. Other events during the evening include a ``musical petting zoo,'' which allows people to try out their favorite instrument; a wine festival, sponsored by Virginia Wineries; and food and beverage sales.

Gates open at 5 p.m., and the concert begins at 7. For more information, call 464-7665.

MARINES HOLD SUNSET PARADE: The Marine Corps Security Force Battalion at the Norfolk Naval Base will hold a sunset parade Friday at 7 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, includes traditional military ceremonies such as tattoo, retreat and lowering of colors. Music will be provided by the Second Marine Division Band from Camp Lejeune.

PILOT CLUB HONORS SHIP: The guided missile cruiser Bainbridge has been honored by the Pilot Club of Chesapeake for the crew's outstanding volunteer service. The Southeastern Virginia Training Center nominated the crew for the many hours it spends repairing recreational equipment and assisting with off-campus activities.

SPEAR SEEKS FORMER CREW: A decommissioning ceremony for the submarine tender L.Y. Spear is scheduled for Sept. 6. Commanding officer Capt. John Paulson and his crew invite all former commanding officers and crew members to join them for the ceremony. For more information, contact Lt. Catherine Babineaux at (804) 444-4800.

SCHOOL'S SHIPBOARD GRADUATION: The first eighth-grade class to graduate from Kemps Landing Middle School, a new Virginia Beach magnet school, will hold its graduation ceremony on board the guided missile frigate Hawes at 10 a.m Saturday at Pier 7. The school and the ship became partners in excellence in the Adopt-A-School program three months ago.

FAMILY SERVICES

NORFOLK is offering ``Winning the Parenting War'' Thursday , from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the base chapel. Free child care is available. Also being offered is ``Telephone Crisis Response and Suicide Response,'' for Hampton Roads ombudsmen, Saturday. The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Norfolk Navy Family Services Center main building. For more information on either program, call 444-2102.

OCEANA is sponsoring an ``Overseas Transfer Workshop'' for service members and their families Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop, which provides information on such topics as shipment of household goods, financial planning and coping with culture shock, will be held in Bldg. 531 at Oceana. COMINGS & GOINGS

DEPARTING: The submarine Spadefish left Norfolk Friday on its final deployment prior to inactivation and decommissioning. Its around-the-world deployment will end in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in October.

CHANGE OF COMMAND:

Capt. H. Denby Starling II relieved Capt. John M. Carter as commanding officer of the amphibious transport dock Shreveport. Starling comes from the carrier John C Stennis where he served as executive officer. Carter is being reassigned as chief of staff of Amphibious Group Two at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base.

Capt. John J. Paulson relieves Capt. Paul J. Ryan as commanding officer of the submarine tender L.Y. Spear. Paulson's previous assignment was as commanding officer of the Emory S. Land, also a submarine tender. Ryan will become director of the operational support division, Chief of Naval Operations, Washington.
