CONSIDER RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP

The animal-activists that have made the headlines recently for their destruction might consider channeling some of their efforts into educating others about responsible pet ownership.

If as much news coverage were given to humane organizations that promote spaying and neutering, then maybe the pet-overpopulation problem would not be so bad. If it takes destruction to make the headlines, ask any animal-health-care professional how it feels to destroy a perfectly healthy animal because it is unwanted.

There is no ``miracle of life'' in watching a litter born if within a few weeks the pups or kittens will experience death at the local shelter.

A puppy or kitten is not born with the knowledge that chewing, digging, scratching, etc., are wrong. These are instinctive behaviors. Only with patience and proper training will a pet know what pleases you and what does not. Training is not an overnight endeavor; it takes time. Too many pets are taken to shelters because of behavior that the owner did not take the time to prevent.
