NEW STUDENT CENTER

Virginia Wesleyan College has announced the addition of a new Student Center to the current capital campaign building program, approved May 15 by the Board of Trustees at its annual spring meeting.

The addition of the Student Center, estimated to cost approximately $4 million, will be accomplished by reducing the size of the previously proposed Academic Building and the Administration Building, both of which are included in the capital campaign construction plans.

The center will connect the Boyd Dining Center with the gymnasium. Student services presently being housed in Villages I and II will be moved to the new center, and business office operations will be relocated from the present dining center to the new Administration Building. The Academic Building is to be the first building in the new construction phase.

In other action, the board voted to add a new general science major to the curriculum and approved the option for students to minor in a subject along with their declared major. Up to this time, students could only declare a double major. The board also approved an operating budget of $21,300,000 for fiscal year 1997, up $1,270,000 from the 1996 figure. by CNB
