Prominent graphics accompanying a recent news article (April 13) described the environmental impairment of the Elizabeth River as merely ``medium'' priority, based on findings of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. Other quite-recent findings reflect a higher cause for concern.
The Elizabeth is cleaner than it was 20 years ago, thanks to many regulatory and voluntary changes in the way we interact with it. But hard work remains to restore even ``medium'' health to our seriously degraded home river.
The nonprofit Elizabeth River Project salutes the hundreds of volunteers from all walks of life who have spent the past three years identifying the Elizabeth's most serious problems and designing a comprehensive action plan to reduce those problems. The community is invited to join Charles Kuralt and other well-known figures helping the Elizabeth River Project launch this action plan at a public conference June 20-21.
