Stanley Robert Smith, husband for 50 years to Mary Catherine Smith, father of Robert Lee Smith and brother to Ner Smith passed into the arms of God on Tuesday, May 28, 1996 at the age of 75.
Born in Hazleton, Pa., Stanley served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Natural Bridge Station in Virginia, helping to build the Blue Ridge and Skyline Parkways.
He entered into military service prior to World War II and served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years, rising from the ranks to officer by merit and distinguished service. He saw action in the North Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of Operations and Korea before assuming command of the Machinist Mate Boilerman Technician School at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and duty assignments with Naval Intelligence and aboard the USS New Jersey, the Lake Champlain, The Providence and the USS Telfair among other naval vessels.
At retirement, he taught for 15 years in the Norfolk Public School System at the Vocational Technical Center instructing in air conditioning and refrigeration.
He will be remembered for his unselfish love of family, his loyalty and integrity, his patriotism, his love of learning and education and his oneness with nature and Native American People, and above all his love of God and His Son Jesus Christ in whom he had unwavering belief and trust.
Mr. Smith will be sent from Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach to Hicks Funeral Home in Elkton, Md. for a graveside service on Friday at 1 p.m. in Gilpin Manor Memorial Park. Memorial donations in his name may be made to a favorite charity or to the United Indians of Virginia Scholarship Fund, 8620 Varina Road, Richmond, Va. 23231.
